Analysis of Music Magazines

R&B Magazine:

This magazine cover consists of a medium – close up of Rebecca G in black and white. The use of no colour on the main image is effective, as it catches the attention of the reader due to the plain, white background used.  As well as the image, the celebrity’s angle of gaze also helps intrigue the audience and is effective, as she is looking directly at the reader. The masthead and parts of the Coverlines use the colour red; this is compelling due to the plain background and colourless main image used. Although there is no red in the main image, the contrast of the black and white and red work well together, and also help to fascinate the reader. The use of the colour red not only brightens the magazine cover, but also works in coordination with the pale image and puts life into it. The bold, red colour and the dull main image complement each other and is a way of catching the eye of it’s’ reader.  The Coverlines on the magazine front cover consist of three colours; black, white and red. These colours work well together because they are commonly used and look vibrant to the eye. The two different font types and the font sizes used are effective as they are striking and grab the attention of the reader, as well as working effortlessly with the main image itself. The use of different font sizes tempts the reader to pay attention to the Coverlines and get an idea of what is to be expected in that specific edition of the magazine. The colours also help to do the same and encourage the reader to focus on the main parts of what will be included in the magazine. For example, on this magazine front cover, the reader would be expecting to know about Rebecca G and also of T.I and his last interview. The reason being is due to these two things being written in the biggest font size as compared to the rest of the Coverlines, as well as standing out the most, because of the use of the vivid, red colour. This front cover consists of the three colours used repeatedly, but in various ways which help to make the magazine cover stand out. For example, above the masthead, the white background uses black text to write the various artists’ names. This works well because the two opposite colours accompany each other and engage the reader, as well as giving them an overview of what they are likely to find inside the magazine. Similarly, the pull quote used on the front cover is written in white, which contrasts the celebrity’s black jacket. Therefore, this stands out and appeals to the reader. We can also see that in parts of the magazine where the main image creates a background of black, due to her jacket (her sleeves), the text is written in the colour white or red, in order to make what is written seem clear to the audience. This is again done near the barcode, where the price of the magazine, edition date and magazine website is written. In this magazine, only one graphic is used, however, the use of the prominent colour red makes the graphic look attractive and bright. From the front cover of the magazine, we can suggest that it is aimed at young adults and teenagers.

Pop Magazine:

This magazine front cover is very different to the R&B magazine cover, clearly through the choice of colours, the layout and also due to the images used as the reader gets an idea of what is to be expected, inside the magazine. We can immediately imply that the main target audience for this magazine are young, teenage girls due to the use of the colours pink and purple. The main image used on the front cover is of Cheryl Cole, which has been taken as a mid-shot.  Cheryl Cole’s angle of gaze is directly towards the reader, making it effective, as it intrigues the audience. This front cover differs a lot from the R&B cover, as it contains many more Coverlines, graphics, colours and images. Due to this reason, this magazine may be more appealing to readers than the R&B magazine. The masthead of this magazine is not like the typical style of masthead; it is unique as it is slanted and is presented in a graphic – a speech bubble, along with a graphic used in the masthead itself – a heart. This is effective as it rapidly catches the attention of the reader, in this case, teenage girls. This magazine cover consists of four main colours being used; pink, purple, black and white. These four colours, in my opinion, work well together as the light and dark colours can be contrasted together. However, there are less Coverlines as compared to the R&B magazine and does not include as many fonts. Although there is a limited amount of fonts, the bright and vibrant colours help to attract the reader. The main Coverlines have a background colour and the text is written in the colour white. This is effective as the white accompanies both the bright colours and makes the text stand out. Despite the fact that the Coverlines are not blocking the main image and do not tend to take away the main focus from it, the Coverlines are too small and unlike the R&B magazine, don’t catch the eye of the reader straight away. There is restricted amount of font sizes used on the front cover, and the only text which attracts the reader is ‘Cheryl’.  Unlike the R&B magazine, this magazine also includes a ‘summer shopping guide’ which suggests to the reader, new and latest fashion tips, along with prices. This is effective, as it meets the expectations of its target audience and is another way of intriguing the magazines’ readers. The pull quote on this magazine is quite attractive, though the colour used is not really vibrant. The use of the colour black for the pull quote is effective as it contrasts the colour white on Cheryl Cole’s shirt and makes it easier to be read. There are many more graphics used in this magazine and lots of colours are used. The different styles of graphics add a unique touch to the magazine and make the target audience very obvious. This magazine also differs from the previous one because of the various images used on the front cover. The images used are mainly of boy bands and male artists, which is an additional way to get teenage girls to buy the magazine. The magazine also gives free posters of the most popular celebs, which attracts the readers and makes them want to purchase the magazine.

Rock Magazine:

This magazine front cover is quite similar to the R&B magazine; however, it completely differs from the pop magazine. The colour scheme used is fairly similar to the R&B magazine, though the music genre is entirely different. The main image used gives the magazine a dark and Goth-like feel, and makes it evident that it is aimed at readers who enjoy rock and heavy metal music. From the front cover, we can make out that the main image is of one of the members of the ‘Black Veil Brides’. We can suggest this due to the colour of blue being used which has probably been taken from the artists’ eyes. The angle of gaze of the artist is effective in regards to the attraction of the reader, as the main image itself is not the typical image we would see on the front of a magazine. The facial expression and hand gesture also help to catch the eye of the reader.  The magazine consists of three main colours; grey, white and red. The red and white have also been used in the masthead which is effective and similar to the R&B magazine. This is because like the R&B magazine, the background of this front cover is also black, and these two contrasting colours (red and white) work well together, in order to attract the reader. Above the masthead, the pattern of red and white text looks appealing and works well with the black background. It also gives the reader an idea of the artists which will be included in the magazine and who they can read about. The Coverlines on this magazine are similar to those on the R&B magazine as they use the same colour scheme and are not limited like the pop magazine. The use of the colours red and white make Coverlines stand out and easily attract the reader. These colours are effective as they become vibrant and complement the black background, making the whole front cover very bold and striking. The variety of fonts and font sizes used on this front cover attract the audience. This is because the colours of the fonts and the main image are both fierce and aggressive; therefore, this makes the whole front cover stand out. In my opinion, the most attractive thing is the pull quote and the blue used above it, to state the artist’s group name. The use of a completely different font and colour, as compared to the rest of the Coverlines, is captivating because it is emphasises who the main music group and what they have to say. This is effective as it intrigues the audience and encourages them to buy the magazine. Like the R&B magazine, this magazine also uses minimal amount of graphics with bright colours, which I feel attracts the readers more. This is because the pop magazine, which used a lot of graphics on its magazine, made the front cover seem much clustered and not as appealing to the older audience – young and middle-aged adults. However, similar to the pop magazine, this magazine front cover also uses images and the offer of free posters inside to gain the reader’s attention. This technique of attracting the audience is quite effective as with the magazine, you receive a gift (poster) for free.
